About your practitioner

My name is Siem van der Meer, and I am your certified Functional Patterns Human Foundations practitioner.

My mission is to help as many people as possible achieve a better quality of life by making use of my knowledge, experience and solution-driven attitude. The main tool I use to achieve my mission is the Functional Patterns training method.

Through this training method I am aiming to help people move better, get out of pain and increase overall performance. My goal is to give you a body without limitations of any kind so you in turn can give the world all the good you have to offer or aspire to offer in the near future.

When it comes to my own body, I reached highs and low. From competing on a high level in football (soccer) and grappling, to doing powerlifting and suffering herniated discs and being able to recover from that by applying Functional Patterns training. These highs and lows gave me insights that help me to understand your situation, whether it is being in pain or looking for an edge in your athleticism to enhance your performance.

I am looking forward to help you get to the next level, and I am available for any question you have. Contact me through the green button or take a look at my Instagram page to learn more and DM me.

What is Functional Patterns?

FP is a movement system that aims to let you discover how to move without pains and injuries. By giving you the tools Functional Patterns will support you to achieve optimal movement, performance and overall health. Take control over your body today.

Through posture assessments, gait cycle analysis, myofascial release techniques and mostly corrective and dynamic exercises we get improvements of your biomechanics. The goal is to replicate movement patterns of great movers and to optimize your sprint. More information on the training process and why sprinting is so important can be found below.

What sets FP apart from other training systems?

The training is based on the first 4 movements: Standing, walking, running and throwing.

The training methods we use are designed to optimize those four foundational movements.
If you learn to perform these movements as accurate as possible, the amount of chronic pain, muscular and postural imbalance, injury risk and even anxiety will strongly be reduced.

We prioritize good movement as the main driver of overall health. At Tu Vida Vital we also believe that for example nutrition, sleep and proper hydration are important, in line with FP's hierarchy of needs.

Our training method benefits every human, no matter your athletic level, experience or physical state. We can help you progress on your level. FP is for everyone.

Benefits of FP training

  • Address dysfunctional movement

  • Increase muscle mass

  • Reduce body fat

  • Reduce risk of injury

  • Manage stress and anxiety

  • Improve energy

  • Get better sleep

  • Reduce chronic pain

Why is it so important to focus on these four movements?

We take a first-principles approach. Every human is designed to perform these first four movements. If we focus on improving those movements, we improve our quality of life. These principles apply to all humans, as humans generally have the same body structure. We train according to our biological blueprint, and this what it means to do Functional Patterns.

Functional training in 3 steps

1

Initial assessment

  • Explanation about FP and the fundamentals, such as the importance of the human function sprinting

  • Standing posture analysis

  • Gait cycle analysis

  • Identify areas of improvement

  • Presentation of the roadmap to improvement

We will assess your standing posture and do a gait cycle analysis You will walk or run on a treadmill or the floor, and we will record your movements and evaluate the slow motion footage to analyze the biomechanics in your gait.

Standing posture pictures serve to purpose to identify areas of imbalance of the body. Examples are a rounded back, uneven hips, uneven shoulders and many more. This is relevant, because these imbalances can be the cause of your pains, lower performance and overall health.

2

Guided myofascial release (MFR)

  • Explanation about MFR

  • Explanation about tools for self-releasing techniques, such as a lacrosse or medicine ball

  • Guided application of techniques

  • Recommendation of techniques specifically useful for you

Guided myofascial release is a self-releasing technique that consists of applying pressure to your myofascial tissue using tools such as massage balls and PVC pipes. This leads to the release of muscle tension, decreased pain and stiffness and more range of motion.

Good technique is essential, which is why we will support in the guidance on all details so you can eventually perform the techniques at home.

3

Corrective and dynamic exercise

  • Explanation about corrective and dynamic exercises

  • Guided application of corrective exercises specifically useful for you

  • Guided application of dynamic exercises specifically useful for you

What really differentiates FP from other movement systems is the application of IMAPS (integrative muscle active potentials). IMAPS are low-speed and controlled movements. Mostly we use a pulley machine or elastic bands to duplicate the sequence of movement of good movers such as great athletes into you as a client. Understanding of the movement will come when you perform the movements yourself. An IMAP will usually only be performed after having a basic control of fundamental movement, which is where corrective exercises will help us with it.
